Stewart Island

Stewart Island is New Zealand’s third largest island, located 30km south of the South Island, across the Foveaux Strait, with an area of 1,746 square kilometres. The island is made of granite, with a wide range of minerals present, forming a rugged terrain.

The rich fauna and flora of the island makes it attractive for tourists. Bird watchers come to Stewart Island from all over the world to spot some of the most beautiful birds that have chosen the island as their habitat. Visitors can also go fishing, hunting and diving. Tourism is, in fact, currently the main income source of the island.

A mere 400 people live in the island, mostly in the Oban settlement. There is a regular ferry service between Bluff in the South Island and the settlement of Oban, as well as an air link by Southern Air
